Question Victoria House - Ambergris Caye, Belize Info Please!

    Hi Folks

Off to Victoria House, Ambergris Caye may 2008 for my honeymoon. I would be very grateful for any info on what sort of fishing to expect. I hope to fish surface lures for tarpon, crevalle n cudas if possible.

Is it safe to fish without a guide?

    Any help appreciated!

    gracias!

    Default Ambergris Caye

I go to Ambergris Caye every year. They have bone fishing, reef, and deep sea. The tarpon are located in the mangroves south of the island. I nearly caught one last year. Unfortunately, it got away.

You can go out to Dilzoncharters.com. I always use Dilzon when I go fishing. He knows the waters and where to catch the fish. Just let him know what type of fishing that you want to do.

If you need any other information about Ambergris Caye, please let me know.

I can give you recommendations about the island and the best places to eat.

Haven't been there since the 90's, but Victoria House was one of my fav haunts. The reef is within swimming distance of the resort. Fav fishing is for reef species on cut bait. I used their boat captains - was reasonable. If you fly fish, you may want to try a flats boat from the Ambergris Guides Assn. Check the San Pedro paper online www.sanpedrosun.net/ Expect to pay there what you would in the Keys.

I always liked Victoria House and the close proximity to the reef. That was before the development started. Was there a couple of years ago - still had nice casitas.

    Default Surface lures vs. Baits

May will be a great time to visit as the winds USUALLY lay down that time of year. I have found that the Tarpon and Jacks cruise the channel to the south of town and there can be some really big Tarpon in at that time of year. I have used a guide in the area named Gilberto "Star" Acosta. He usually guides out of El Pescador. Unfortunately I do not have his contact info. Who ever you use you will need a guide or boat to get to where the fish are. In the early AM before all the boat traffic picks up is a good time to fish the Tarpon. I have had good luck on the fly rod with a 120lb. Tarpon as my largest. A black death tied on a circle hook was the ticket for me with 4 other fish in the 20-60lb. class.
My fishing partner was a gear guy and did as well on numbers as I did but did it useing bait fish that we would catch fresh each morning. He would rig these up under a float bobber if the fish were rolling and with out if we did not see them up. He got more Jacks using the bait than I did but Tarpon were equal. Good luck with your trip and have fun. >< ))>
