As the 2007 saltwater angling season draws to a close, most of the returning salmon stocks are in their native rivers spawning or have spawned, it is a time to reflect on the angling successes and lessons learned. Those who put in the long hours will savor the memories of another year out on the waters around Vancouver Island. For most local anglers it was a very good year with nice numbers of Chinooks out in the Georgia Strait. Although the fish seemed to be in different locations almost every day, finding them seemed to be the only factor in having success. The best fishing grounds again this year was the south end of both Denman and Hornby Islands, with large schools of baitfish showing for most of the season, it came to no surprise that the fish were close to their food source on most days. The migrating schools of Chinook started in early May and ended with the arrival of the Big and Little Qualicum River Chinooks around mid August. The mid September fishery in Courtenay/Comox was outstanding with limits of large Puntledge River Chinooks almost every time out. This fishery is due to the hard work of the staff the Puntledge Hatchery who has had great success recently with the fall Chinook run. The Chum fishery north of Campbell River was excellent this year with great weather and lots of fish around.
