Marlins all around Manta, Ecuador!!!

The Manta season started with a bang. Even though, we have always known that thousands of Marlin visit the coasts of Manta every Fall, we could have never foreseen the ¨Invasion¨ we have seen this weekend.

With water temperatures at 77 F and southern current, we have seen the best Marlin numbers in Manta for a single weekend in years. 4 boats out had a total of 12 Marlin releases. Over 3 dozen more strikes total for the weekend. The interesting thing is that all releases were Black and Blue Marlin. The biggest one was a sure-500 pound black that was released on Saturday and had everyone who stayed at port drooling to go out there. One sailfish was the only one that was released that was not Black or Blue. Also, we are seeing large Stripped Marlin concentrations a bit more to the North of the bank and the amazing Wahoo numbers to the South. Two boats reported caught more that 15 Wahoo each at an average weight of 30lbs.

Capt. Sergio Bazan of the Bertram 31 said he has never seen such a massive Marlin day in Manta, and he´s been around. With more than 20 years of experience, he has fished in probably all the Ecuador fishing banks known and unknown. He and his crew managed to fight 7 marlin and got 2 releases on Saturday. Overall they saw about a dozen Marlin. Both releases were Blues. ¨This is the place to be now. We were more worried about not getting our arms tired, rather than chasing any tails. They just kept coming, one after another¨ he said on Saturday night.

We are now beginning the Manta season which should run until October. After such a start, we can only imagine what these next couple of months are going to be like. We are sure that last year´s record release of 800 pound Black will certainly be broken this year.
