While I was handling a few of our duck hunting charters the past couple of days Capt. Bobby K. and Capt. Josh got offshore and had some fairly good action. Capt. Josh had part of the Brand Energy group, they ended their day with a a couple of blackfin, 1 nice wahoo about 50lbs. and a couple of Amberjack. Capt. Bob had the Billy Blackwater group from San Antonio, Tx. Mr. Blackwater fishes all the redfish cup tournaments and after seeing what we were catching this past summer he had to get down here and try his luck on YFT. After about 1 hour of fishing one of the passengers said "there is a huge blue shark next to the boat" as Capt. Bob made it back there he saw a decent sized Mako heading towards the bait and not two seconds later the reel started screaming. Put two and two together, the thought was-- we've got a Mako on. The fish never went down and ran on the surface a good ways. Then sounded some but fought somewhat unusual. An hour later as the fish was inching towards the boat everyone anticipated seeing a Mako come up and instead they had about a big tuna on. Once the realization was made it was a tuna and not a shark the drag was tightened up, 5 minutes later nice 120lb. yellowfin tuna in the boat. The fish was caught by Miss Blackwater (congrats) and after the fish was in the boat she literally broke down into tears of happiness. The thought now is the Tuna got to the bait first, the shark saw the tuna, headed towards him and the rest is history. Yesterday, Capt. Bobby had Dr. Craig and his father out. He said it was slick calm and the water was crystal blue. They went two for two on Blackfin tuna and caught their limit of A.J.'s. The tuna bite is more than likely right around the corner, January is the start time, how late or early is hard to say. It is Tuna and Wahoo time and everything this time of the year is on the bigger side. We've still got open dates in Jan. and Feb. If you have always wanted to catch big tuna and wahoo, novice or experienced this is the time of the year you want to get out there fishing with us.
