Noobie ghosthunting the Corn Islands, Nicaragua

I am heading to Little Corn Island in the Caribbean in June and I plan on fly fishing for bonefish. I am an avid bait fisherman but new to fly fishing; always been interested and now I have a reason to pursue it.

I got a good deal on a Redington 8 lb combo with graphite rod and disc drag and I think I've collected enough information from this forum and google as far as what line, flies, etc. I should bring.

However being as I have never fly fished before (of course I do plan on doing so before I go) I would like information on technique for fly fishing for bonefish. I have been unable to find much on this subject.

And how important is the color of the line? I have bright orange, which seems a bit ostentatious, and have read that I should get sand, clear or blue. At 40 bucks should I worry about it?

Also, if anyone has fished this area before any advice you can offer would be great.

OK i got al the information I needed except how much does the color of the fly line matter. Should I invest the money in a clear, sand, or blue fly line. I have a 9 ft. monofilament liter if that makes a difference.

First of all, "liter" is spelled leader. The color of the fly line itself does not matter much in my opinion. I have fished everything from orange to yellow to green to blue and none of them seemed to make a difference. The monofilament leader should hide the fly enough.

Before you go, you should make an effort to learn a double-hull cast. This will be necessary for the longer casts in the wind, which is almost unavoidable. You should also work on making good presentations with the fly. Ideally, you should be able to put a fly in a hoola-hoop from 50 ft. If you can do that, you should have no problem hooking some bones.

Thanks for the advice, I am looking into the double haul cast; looks tricky. Hopefully I can get it down before I go. I want to make the most out of this opportunity.

I guess my question would be if you've paid for trip,airfair,hotel and hopefully a guide to get you on the fish.....why are you worrying about $40 for a bonefish line?
The colour can matter depending on circumstances.Myself,I use a blue SA bonefish line or the Monic clear or blue bonefish lines.
I would hate to see you go all that way only to spook every fish you see with the wrong line.

Line color is meaningless. Leader length and color are more important.Clear water dictates floro leader.Some fly line does better in hot climates than others but for one trip it will not matter. I would get Lefty Kreah's book Presenting the fly and read it. Its the bible.
