Calm seas and bright sunshine greeted the tremendous number of anglers fishing Mobile Bay/Dauphin Island yesterday. Bait was in short supply, but a friend and I had fair success with artificials around the east end of Sand Island, and just outside the first sand bar off Dauphin Island Beach, landing several nice trout, a few feisty spanish, and a keeper-size pompano. Farther west, the bite let up around high tide, but the day was so nice we fished all the way from the far west end of Dauphin Island through the sound to the bridge. Water quality in the gulf was excellent, notwithstanding recent rains. Inside the sound and the bay, the water was a little dingy, but overall not too bad. All in all, a good day. Some live shrimp and croakers would have probably improved the catch, but we still enjoyed the weather, the seas and the fishing.
