My son and I had an absolutely fabulous day fishing with Impulse Charters out of Morehead City, NC last week. Captain Cameron Guthrie and the mate (whom I refer to as "First Mate Nate") provided us with an excellent time fishing offshore.
We pushed off to the 800's early in the morning and trolled mostly naked ballyhoo at about 7 knots.
It didn't take long for us to catch our first sailfish, which I delegated to Stephen. After a good fight, he caught his first sailfish! This means that between the two of us, he caught a sailfish first. This was also Stephen's first opportunity to use a fighting chair.
After that, it was my turn. I had a blast reeling in my first sailfish which, as expected, put up a really good fight.
Finally the captain noticed a school of mahi and we had fun sightcasting to those for a while. We were simply using chunks of ballyhoo on medium hooks and spinng reels. It was almost literally like shooting fish in a barrel.

The water was flat and it was an absolutely beautiful day on the water. Not that we took too much advantage of it, because we also enjoyed the satellite TV in the cabin!
It's nice to be out on the water once in a while just fishing without having to worry about the piloting, the tackle, managing the lines, rigging the bait, etc. A perfect day off!
One good note also about Captain Guthrie's honesty: I had inadvertently left a blank check on the boat. He called me to let me know about that and I simply asked him to void it and tear it up. I appreciate that.
