Default Halouver - Black and tunas

Finally was able to take the boat out after a couple of months of downtime, fished out of Halouver from 11 to about 3pm. Lester hooked it up again, blacked out my well with nice pilchards for super cheap. Forgot to get a new kite so we had to drift. 20 minutes into the drift we get the first skip, nice fight on 12lb. Second drift we get a sail fired up next to the boat, swatting some freebies that we threw out earlier. Got hooked up but by the time I got the last rod in and ready to take off we got spooled, hard to get everything in with only two people... Did a couple more drift with one more skip in the boat and a decent black.

    Cool

How do you clean/eat the skippies? Last month, my bro caught the first one we've ever got. I bled it good and iced it down, and cleaned it when we got home (yes, I cut out the dark meat/bloodline). The following day I went to slice it up for sashimi and it was one of the most horrible tasting fish I've ever had. I bit into 1 piece and almost threw up. Wound up throwing all of it away. I know alot of people say they're awesome, so I must have did something wrong.

You didn't do anything wrong, they're not that good... I've eaten my fair share of them, but in all honesty they're nowhere near a YFT or even a blackfin.

I used to think the same thing..If you bleed them right away and cut out all the bloodline. They are way better than BFT any day! I make poke salad with them..They have a much better texture and are not mushy like bft..The most important thing is to clean and cut out all the skin and mushy part that touched water..

    BTW Sonic nice haul!

How do you bleed them differently?

I bleed all my fish by cutting the kidney right underneath the pec fin, then ice them down real good. Trim away blood line like usual, then add wasabi. Never found them as good as BFT.

I have found with tuna (and most fish) if you keep the table really clean, and don't rinse off the meat until just before you cook it stays solid. If you get any water at all on them, it starts to go down hill quickly.

I sever the bloodline right behind the head and stab in the pec fin...I have not bled them correctly in the past and they had a very metalic taste..
