Where to start. I guess with the weather...again. This has really been an oddball winter for most of us in South La., really for the Central part of the U.S. on over the east coast. The winds have been strong and the temperatures a lot colder than what we are use to. Has it affected the fishing..yes. Water temperatures offshore have been colder than years past but with that being said it has still been an O.K. year so far but a little below avg. What we can usually do is pattern the fish. We can get into a 2,3,or 4 day bite most of the time. We usually have an idea of how the bite will go from one day to the next, but not his year. It usually starts out good on day 1, it peaks on day 2 or 3 and then slows down on day 4 and 5. Then the cycle starts over again. Well this year that hasn't been the case mainly due to back to back cold fronts. Every day has been a different day. One day everyone catches their targeted species and the next maybe a handful or nobody does. I guess no matter how you put it we are still catching fish but we are having to really fish and not just show up. This past Sunday all three boats made it out. Capt. Josh had the Tom Hayden Crew from Tallahasee, Fla. Capt. Will Bradford and myself had the Dan Heyne crew from Coldwater, Ohio. Capt. Josh and his crew ended their day with 3 nice wahoo and 1 blackfin tuna. Capt. Will B. ended his day with 3 nice Wahoo and some Kings. My crew came down last year about this time and filled the boat with wahoo. They wanted no WAHOO and just wanted to stick with trying to catch one of those big 150+lb. tuna that we are known for catching this time of the year. If you have done this long enough you know that persistence pays off and that catching a big tuna is more likely than not. I will say that these guys worked the lines hard, but in the end we ended up with 1 beeliner and 3 A.J.'s. It just wasn't our day for Tuna. There were a handful (6 or 7) of tuna caught by other boats, several of them were nice and big over a hundred lb. fish but it just wasn't our day. We were marking big red blobs on the fish finder so I would be willing to bet some of them were Tuna but we just couldn't get them to bite. Next time for sure. The Wahoo were the stars of the day and they made their presence known. Just about every boat that came in had 2 or more. Looks like our next day out will be this Thurs. or Fri. weather pending. I should have a good report...We've got open days in March and April.
