I hooked up with Todd, Sam, Steve, and Steve's girlfriend Amanda to do some grouper fishing. The plan was to start in 35 feet and work our way out to 60. We hit 35 feet and started pulling the gags in the boat as double and triple headers until we had our limit, which came much quicker than expected. We were only 30-40 minutes into our trip and we had our 10 gags so we went south toward Homosassa and hit a small wreck and got more gags and very small AJs and spanish macs so we went deeper to 60 feet to try for red grouper. The red grouper were as thick as the no-see-ums were back at the dock. Every drop we were pulling up red grouper. They were actually hitting our jigs before they made it to the bottom. Most of the red grouper were small but we did get our limit with little effort. The red snapper were also abundant in 60 feet along with the gags. The gags are everywhere right now and in all depths but we seemed to have our best gag bite in the shallower water and the larger fish were also there. We got several over 30 inches with the largest fish being 38 inches and a few others not far behind that. We saw a bunch of large schools of bait but they were all in the 20-40 foot range. The water temp was 73 in 30 feet and 69 in 60 feet. That may be why the bait is hanging in closer. The fish were caught on thread fins, 5 oz flutter jigs, and 6 oz Alien jigs by No Alibi.
Todd snagged this 11 inch trigger fish on a flutter jig. it was pecking at it and managed to get hooked
