Back in January my best friend Perry said it was time for a trip, it had been too long since we took time to just fish together. I always wanted to catch a big redfish and I rather fish here in the good ole USA so that was the plan. I discovered Captain Greg Dini in my search and booked a trip for the second week in November. But BP decided to throw a wrench into the plans, we were worried about the oil disaster but Captain Greg told us not to get crazy everything was alright where he fished and he would keep us updated...everything was fine. He told me these fish are on crabs, they love em, they will hit a top water fly in the warmer months but these larger fish moved in with cooler water temperatures so top water was iffy at best. Our hotel was in New Orleans, Capt'n Greg picked us up every morning at 6:15 we headed to Penny's for a real Southern breakfast and we picked up our shrimp po boys for lunch (we ate them everyday even for dinner.... way too good). After about 25 minutes buzzing across the water we were on the flats, our four day expedition had started, we were jazzed plus not another angler around for miles. The first fish we hooked were teen size reds right off the bat and from there on it just got better and better. Redfish up to 36lbs and black drum to 46lbs, lots of fish in the high twenties and low thirties. Black and purple, chartreuse and black, all purple flys made from SF Blended Flash and EP brush and bunny strips as well. The fish were a little tough to see as the water was clear but slightly off color, you could see the fish easily with good glasses though. It was totally awesome as we saw over 100 drum charge past the boat one afternoon after being spooked by the pole in the bottom. Bird life was incredible and loads of dolphins would appear and disappear as the boat made its way to and from the flats. Perry had the Cajun Slam with a black drum, redfish and sea trout one day. And after a day on the water we ate the best food ever, oysters, crab, shrimp, gumbo and the list goes on. Thanks to the Uptown Angler for helping us out one evening and going the extra yard. All fish were caught on 9 weight rods and floating lines. Super trip...we're going to do it again for sure.
