Christmas has passed. The holidays are officially over. The snowfall that recently found it's way to North Carolina's dunes has left as fast as it came. And here I sit banging on my keyboard in an attempt to post a fishing report.
The last time I fished was Dec 12 and giant bluefin were the target. Sadly...No runs no drips no nothing. Not a tuna mark on the screen in five days of swimming perfectly rigged horse ballyhoo. Oh yes there were plenty of gannets around dropping like incoming mortar rounds onto unsuspecting shad accompanied with pods of porpoise and whales but no co-operation whatsoever from the tunas.
Beside those five days of tunafish hunting and a few more days of deer hunting for me, I did the Santa Claus thing. I decorated my outside trees....I placed candles in my windows. Now I am not talking about a Griswald Christmas charade but she insists we amp up our electric meter bill with five million lights this time of year. Trust me people I am not stupid. I am a professional here. I know how to keep my woman happy! So please bear with me. I am not one of those whipped puppies okayyyy.......I can go along with her plan with a smile on my face and bite my lower lip at the same time. So I go along with the same procedures prescribed to me by the poneytail for the last fifteen years. Hang that over there she barked. Put that one on the front door. "Don't throw the ice sicles on the tree!!"
Aw geeezzz......To compound matters even worse for me....The Best & the Worst of Tred Barta just came on the tube and she wants me to go out and cut some holly. C u t s o m e h o l y ??? F o r w h a t ??? .....He's bear hunting with a bow for crying out loud!!! I went to the garage to find some gloves and cutters.....I'll get some holly alright........ I hope Tred gets his bear....
Now it's up the attic stairs. Down the attic stairs. I went numerous times back and forth ....I'm dying here....box after box...finally....finally....there it is.....I just found the tree...... I thought for a minute I was saved for it appeared to be already decorated with a white "snow" of sorts ... but soon realized it was covered in attic insulation. I drug that bad boy down to the next deck. What a mess. You know what I hate about the whole Christmas decorating thing? I don't want to sound like I complain all the time but... It's the mess created by those little green fake fir twigs that fall off the tree and find their way from one room to the next. The kitchen...the bathroom....geezus h how'd they get in my truck? That really gets me. Anyway, I then unwrapped 14,861 individual ornaments.
At this point I would give 5k for a .22 pistol single shot midnight special with one short rim fire shell. That's all I need. Lights out dead on deck no more decorating for me. At this point if anyone is still reading this gargon of mine you are probably asking yourself "where's the freakin' fishing report!!!?"
Well ladies and gentlemen, this is my fishing report for the month of December and it ain't a pretty one! Here I am, the mate on the NC based RUN-OFF, one of the finest offshore platforms of bloodsplatter & meat destruction I have ever rigged a bait on and here I am today, with a light and slight going on at 40 fathoms. I'm here, Jan 5th, home alone, and putting away those same 14,861 diamond studded, jade embossed, ruby inlaid, one of a kind collector item tree ornaments that I just unwrapped a mere 20 days ago.
I'm not kiddin' here people. I just need to find one little ol' lead short round to put myself out of the decorating business and.....
Uhhh pardon me a moment.....sorry...the phones ringing.
"Hello"....
"Holey crapola. ......cool !.............thanks for the call bro." I said. "I'm done with my chores so I can be ready whenever and standing by for the call if you want to go! " The call was from was Capt. Brian whom I work for. Pure animal. I call him the beast.
Like I said earlier... we have had a good run of light and slight weather lately here on the southern outer banks....Morehead City to be precise. So my fishing ree-port is: Seems several rigs made it offshore over the New Years weekend. The wahoos and blackfin apparently chewed pretty doggone good being it was Jan 1-2 and colder than a witches uhhh broom.
I also was told that a blue one was either fought and lost or possibly even released just south of the Big Rock area.......and yes I said January
When we built our current home five years ago, why didn't I build a private closet in the living room?....one with a slide out deck on roller wheels...that I could mount my pre-decorated fake fir Christmas tree to with all it's glimmering glory.....and simply slide it in and out for display come every Dec the 10th? Wouldn't that make my world so Christmas simple?
Then ......I could give more personal first hand fishing reports instead of the phone reports.

Great to hear from you my friend! I was given a fishing gift by a friend on News Year Day and the fish were indeed chewing. Braeden (7) caught a 54 pound hoo and Garrett added a 40 pounder.
Looking forward to seeing you soon
I can relate with the decoration thing bro. Glad to see your report and looking forward to the next one.

Welcome to the Forum guys!
Some of the biggest fights Mrs. V and I have ever had has been about "the lights". Well, wallpapering was a close second.
One year, she decided that it would be a good idea to hang lights all the way around the bird cage (that's screened enclosure around the pool for the "Yankees"). OK, in order to keep her happy, I would oblige. I really didn't want to drill holes in the frame just for lights, so I decided to get those silicone sucker cups and just stick them to the brace and hang the lights from there. Our pool has NC river rock around the edges and towards the back. Makes it pretty difficult to stand a ladder on it to stick up the cups and hook the lights to it. I started at the exterior outlet. Up and down, up and down, balancing on the rocks as I go around the pool. Finally, I get to the part where the gutter is. From here, it's really easy. I grab the last strand of lights, plug it in the the hanging one and start to hang it. I wasn't really paying attention at this point, as I was on solid ground and the hanging was easy. I dropped the strand of lights that I was holding in my hand.
As I started down the ladder to pick it up, all of a sudden the lights that were hanging started popping out, and the weight of the strand kept going. To make a long story short, it took me two hours to put most of the lights up. It took about 30 seconds for gravity to take them all down, while I watched it happen.
I don't think I've cursed as much at one time in my whole life. I threw all of those lights away, put up the ladder, and went fishing at the lake out back.
The only people that tell you it can't be done are the people who haven't done it themselves.
