Default Malihini Report from Sportfish San Diego

*First of all, my future reports for this boat will be right to the point with the counts and local outlook. Thank you in advance for this forum and my apologies for the long wind post.

I'm glad and privilaged to be invited to post daily reports fresh off the water by 5pm every day the 3/4 day Malihini is out fishing. I was 5 the first time my pops Joe took me out on this boat and have loved her since. Her new owners are great people and a friendly, veteran crew of SoCal fishing off San Diego makes a great fit. Malihini is one of San Diego's longest running boats with a brief mission to transport soldiers around San Diego Bay during WW2. Her well stocked galley with aweomse greasy burgers is still run by June who I have fished with as long as I can recall.

Since SoCal just started its annual select cod and other groundfish closures Jan 1 to March 31 for most species (May for the Ling's) or until the CA DFG says so, most boats are making the relatively short trip to the Coronado's (Islands) just across the USA/Mex border where there are no target fish closures. Here Vermillion Red's, Chillipepper's, Starries, Ling's, Salmon Grouper, California Sculpin and other popular bottom dwellers can be legally caught and released or consumed although deeper water Cod don't do well being released and are premium eating. There's always a rare shot at a nice explosive fighting home guard Yellow (Yellowtail off San Diego is in the Jack family a cousin of the Ulua or Jack Trevalle)

That said here's the report for Saturday, January 15 2011 (a local problem this time of year open party fishing is a lack of fishermen, not a lack of fish):

    DATELINE SATURDAY JANUARY 15, 2011:

Hello this is Rob Mailly again from sportfishsandiego.com today with the Malihini fish report.

Capt./Co-Owner William Wilkerson just called in today’s fish report for their daily 3/4 day sportboat trip. Capt./Co-Owner Mike Schmidt ran the boat today for another excellent day on the water with the following fish counts for his 48 happy anglers:

    ANGLERS – 48

    COUNT – FISH SPECIES

    5 – CALIFORNIA SCORPIONFISH (SCULPIN)
    91- ASSORTED ROCKFISH
    112 – VERMILLION REDS
    9 – WHITEFISH
    2 – LINGCOD
    27 – SALMON GROUPER

It was another text book San Diego Chamber of Commerce fishing day with sunny weather and plenty of great eating fish to fill the freezers or cook up for family and friends.

The Malihini is a definite go for fishing again on Monday January 17, 2011 and as of this posting a maybe for Tuesday January 17, 2011. This time of year isn’t about lack of fish or bad weather – It’s about a lack of fishermen so book your open party or group charter now. Enjoy light loads and some great days out on the water fishing the Cod and plethora of other groundfish species that can be caught this time of year, not to mention always a relatively rare shot this time of year at the very explosive fighting homeguard variety Yellowtail.

The ticket prices for these trips are $80.00 per person and they include your Mexican fishing permit. …hope to see you folks on the cod grounds with us.

To make your reservation you can go to the online booking tab here on the boat web site or call the landing and book that way 619-222-1144

    All the best
    Capt. Bill & Capt. Mike
    Edit

    * Moderator feel free to move this post if I posted in the wrong forum - wasn't sure if this belonged in the Guides forum since I am posting on behalf of a local San Diego open party boat/charter.
