This week was surprising. First area off the spoil islands, skipped out a small Pompano. This far from one of the inlets really made this a surprise. They have been very rare on the flats this year. The second surprise was in the same area. A pair of Tarpon in the 50 pound range were working the edge of the flat. Later on both of them put a little tingle in my bones as they crashed bait on the flat behind me. Always get a little nervous when something big busts bait and is out of sight. There are a few Black Tips in the river so it pays to be a little cautious.
The mullet run is in full swing. Managed to foul hook a couple on jerk baits. Don't believe that there are big Trout and Reds hanging around every school of bait. You still have to find the right area. This week produced several Trout from mid slot up to 6 pounds. Spent most of the day with top waters. Trout are hitting hard and the Reds as usual are clumsy and miss the plug.
Hope the fish hold until 9 and 10 Sept. This is the weekend for the Indian River Memorial Hospital Tournament. The Captains meeting and registration is on 9 Sept from1700 to 1900 at Captain Hirams in Sebastian. Lines in after midnight. Weigh in at Captain Hirams from 0900 to 1300 on 10 Sept. Not a lot of money, but it is for a good cause, and it is a lot of fun.
