Key west flats fishing report by AWS charters 2/1/12
To day off Key west I had the pleasure of Fishing with Dave and Patty Widick from Iowa on their first Key west vacation. We left the dock at 6am and to go tarpon fishing under the lights, fishing was slow with just a few tarpon busting shrimp. Dave made a few shots and only had one take, we then headed off to look for bigger fish. Our next spot we put a 30 and a 60 pound tarpon in the air but both threw the hook on the jump. We hit another spot and landed a goliath grouper and had a tarpon grab but we quickly lost the fish to a trap line. Barracuda fishing was next on the agenda and Dave had close to 20 grabs but we only landed 1 very small one. We headed back towards Key west to try our luck shark fishing and were hooked up within the first 20 minutes, the lemon shark ran out about a 100 yards of line before we turned it head, we got 1 more run before the hook broke. We found quite a few more sharks before we got a take, this one made another very long run before he finally started to tire. 10 minutes later Dave landed the first large fish of the day, the sum total on this flats fishing trip was 4 tarpon eats non landed, 20+ barracuda hooked 1 landed and 2 sharks with 1 landed. Thank god the fishing finally cooperated and Dave got his trophy.
