We are in the in between season. The grass has not emerged on the flats and the water temperature is up. Still finding the Trout in the residential canals, but the quality is going down. Mostly shorts. Decided to give a short canal a shot this week. Have not been in since the freeze. The first section was perfect no hits. On the back section, a summer fun Tarpon hole, boated three short Snook and a short slot Red. The Snook were an encouraging sign. I missed two more. Still not much out on the flats. Watched a couple of boats chasing Ladyfish. For my part they are a royal pain, Ladyfish and small Jacks are all over. Played with a Red on the edge of a spoil island. Drifted by before realizing that it was in fact a fish lying in with the wood on the bottom. Several casts and nothing. On to a mud bay. Worked the area hard, water was really dirty because of the winds. Managed to land a mid slot Red. Working a lot of the areas in search of potential sights for tournaments that will be coming up in the Spring. Always kills me, anglers pre -fish in the same areas that they will fish on a tournament day. I like to search and check out areas that have not been productive. It has paid off on a few occasions with fish that have made the board. Next week it should be back to the Grant area and the spoil islands in search of Gator Trout and Pompano.
