Some of you know Big Derek from his post or from fishing with him. Well he and his Dad (Bob) have been wanting to do some crappie fishing. Derek's boat is in post duck hunting mode still, so I invited them to fish with me yesterday. So 7:00 am found us zipping across Harris Lake in mid 40 degree temps. We get the lines out and for the first 2 hours it's nothing. I mean goose egg brother. So we decide to crank them in and go searching for fish with the sonar. We find some back in the creek along the creek channel and deploy baits again. Derek breaks the ice with small bass but it's not the species we are searching for. I notice a big tree that has fallen in the lake and decided to investigate. As we troll by the tree Derek gets a hit and comes tight on our first crappie of the day!Now the fish in this picture is at least 10 inches long, but in Big Derek's hands it look like a minnow!
So we continue on down the bank looking for more structure. It's not long before Bob hooks up with a nice crappie of his own.
Now we are feeling better about our day. With a little adjustment to our set up we start to slowly but surely put some fish in the box!
Just before midday the sun breaks through the clouds and the wind starts to pick up. About that time Bob hauls in our biggest fish of the day. A nice sized slab with thick shoulders. I'll estimate this one to weigh between 1 3/4 to 2 pounds!
Around 1:30 Derek and Bob hook up at the same time and put 2 more nice keepers in the boat. We decide to end on that note and get out of the wind. I had a blast fishing with these two and they had me laughing all day. It's good to see Father and Son still enjoying a day of fun together.
We ended the day with 28 nice crappie and a bad case of wind burn!
After getting up so early in the morning, fighting wind and fish for most of the day we were all wore out on the ride home. Some of us were more tired than others.
