I just started fly fishing for reds and specs and haven't been having much luck. I've been out in the flats around Destin, FL. I've always used traditional rods and have been able to cover alot of water. Since picking up the fly rod I haven't had much sucess. Are you guys mostly sight fishing? I haven't seen alot of fish out there so I have been mostly casting into the grass flats. I know they are out there because my buddy I was fishing with was catching them with a spinning real and shrimp. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
If your buddy is catching fish on shrimp try throwing a shrimp pattern fly (match the hatch). Since you are throwing over grass flats make sure your fly has a weed guard on it. Topwater flys will work great in the early morning hours - Todds wiggle minnow is one of my favorites as is the Rainy's bubble head. Crease flys and poppers are also a good choice. When it comes to getting a little deeper use a fly with light weight dumbell eyes or bead chain eyes. Clouser minnows are always a good choice, they imatate small bait fish. Fish around the sandy potholes if you can find any.
