This past week was just about the nicest stretch of weather we’ve had all year. Nice comfortable temperatures and nice light winds. At least until the weekend when we had a little fall northerly that caused some queasyness, at least on boats that went offshore. And, it seems like there are signs that the “fall run” is underway.
Striped bass fishing improved quite a bit by the end of the week with the just about all the charterboats bringing back limits. There aren’t as many b
ig fish as there has been, but there are plenty of mediums around. And, they can be caught anyway you like, trolling, live bait, diamond jigs or even casting at times. Plus, the falsies are here in force as well.
Offshore the bigeye bite at the Hudson continued into the week, but slowed toward the weekend. And, it was crowded out there. A friend was out during the week and counted lights from 97 boats. Fewer boats fished at the Tails & Dip, but they caught enough yellowfins and longfins to keep them satisfied, although by the weekend that was getting a little tougher with the fish chowing down on tiny baits and getting particular. One interesting site was a herd of pilot whales rounding up and eating the yellowfins.
I haven’t heard much of anything from southeast of Block Island except that there are a lot more falsies than bluefins around and the bluefins are all on the small side.
Shark fishing is still on the slow side with anywhere from no bites to two bites the norm. But the makos that I heard about were bigger than the summer ones, all over two hundred pounds. And, fishing ten to twelve miles out is over. You have to get out around twenty miles or so.
The Montauk Surfmasters Tournament started this weekend and will be running until November 25. Check in at Westlake Marina, Star Island or Paulies tackle Shop in town for more info.
I’ve finally got the Montauk Sportfishing forum in the proper way. Check it out at http://www.montauksportfishing.com/forum.html and contribute. It won’t work if I’m the only one posting. Let everyone know where you fished, when and what you caught. Or ask questions. What’s the down side? NONE.
