Fishing this week with us in Tropical Panama were 4 returning anglers and 2 special guest that were interested in experiencing different fishing techniques. Our initial plan was to jig, throw top-water poppers and live-bait fish. The weather was great with partly cloudy skies and seas calm, but the water color could have been better. Water temperature was on the warm side and the Yellowfin Tuna had not been spotted in the past few days. With all this information at hand, we decided not to make the long run offshore but instead try our luck at Isla Paridas and Ladrones.


Popper Fishing


After an early wakeup and breakfast, we headed out to Isla Paridas to get a good jump on the Snappers, Roosters and Jacks on popper fishing. Water color was not right, but we decided to give it a try anyway. We snuggled up against the rocky shoreline, put the twin Yamahas in neutral, and threw poppers on numerous rocky points and depressions that typically hold these species. After working hard at trying to raise or hook a fish, it was evident that it was not going to be a popper day at Isla Paridas. Time to move on to Ladrones!


Working Birds


As we approached Isla Ladrones, we caught a glimpse of birds working several areas on the North side of the island. We made a stealthy approach to the nearest activity and bridled a live Blue Runner to see what was lurking below the surface. A small Amberjack came looking for breakfast and we were hooked up. After a quick fight and the AJ in the box, out went another Blue Runner and this time a Mullet Snapper wanted a meal but ended in the box instead. We had a feeling that something else other than bottom fish must be in the mix, so we decided to change it up a bit. It turned out that trolling was going to be the ticket on this trip!

A 5 line spread went out hoping for either Wahoo or Dorado, and a Dorado was the first to hit. George went to work right away putting his skills to work. It wasn’t long before he had a nice Dorado in the box. It didn’t take long for George to boat 4 other Dorados. The hot lure this morning was a Wahoo lure made by no other that Darrell Primrose at www.Ballyhood.com. Below are a couple of pictures of this lure in action and the Dorado on board. Brian got into the Dorado action as well, using Ballyhoo as skip bait. Using Bonita skip bait is a popular technique in Panama for raising Marlin and very large Dorado, but today, skipping Ballyhoo helped Brian put 3 Dorados in the box. We are excited to see that the Dorado action is coming alive in the Gulf of Chiriquí, which is typical for this time of year. Let’s hope it continues.

Nice Mahi on a wahoo lure, looks like the bite is always on down there in Panama! Just a couple months away till we are down there, the guy's can't wait.....
