Port Canaveral Offshore 01-24-13
The sea's have not been kind to our fishing schedule, but we still made it out. The forecast was for 3' sea's and 10kt North winds. It started out that way, but at 20 miles out was 15kt to 20 kt winds, and sea's a steep 3-4' and bigger. We started the day running Southeast towards Pelican. I thought that a few days of a strong North wind may have moved the temp break South, plus I did not want to start the day fighting the sea's. Pelican had a few commercial boats dragging lines for Kings, but we did not really see anyone pulling fish in. We only marked fish once, and they stayed deep. With little to show for the first hour of pulling lines we turned the bow eastward, and set a 5 line spread.

The sea's continued to grow as we got further from shore. At 120' we did fid some scattered weeds, so we turned North to follow, well sort of North. We could not maintain even a 6-7 mph trolling speed straight into the sea's without waves breaking over the bow and flooding the deck, so we had to slowly tack our way North. We did soon find a fish however. We were really hopeing for Mahi to put in the icebox, but a Sailfish was great bonus catch for our guest. The short line, only 30' behind the boat in the propwash got nailed, but soon went limp. I quickly freelined the bait, and before long the fish hit again, this time with hook set. The rod went in my guest hand and the fight was on. It quickly started an arial display, so we cleared the other lines and played the fish out till it was boatside for a quick release.


We continued North until we were tired of fighting the sea's and decided to anchor up over structure. We found an area of very active bottom and proceeded to put dinner in the cooler. There were like most places, plenty of good sized Red Snapper that we Tagged and released, but we did find plenty of keepable fish, Porgy's, Trigger and Lane Snapper. The sea's finally started to calm a little, and by the time we pulled anchor to make our way to port it was back to what was origonally forecast for the day. In to port we went with plenty of fish for several nice dinners.
