Team Tex-Mex in Puerto Vallarta,MX. Onboard of "El Matador". 1PART.
Puerto Vallarta,MX- March is always very slow in Manzanillo,Mx waters. Cold water and Green, no good for sailfish, marlin or dorado.
A very close friend Capt. Edgar "El chino" told me about the Tuna Madness in Puerto Vallarta,MX. Big Yellowfin Tuna, some striped marlin and few swordfish. Puerto Vallarta fishing is very different than Manzanillo because you need to go 60 miles offshore or 80 miles to the Marias Island to fish for big tunas and swordfish is very rarely the Blue Marlin in this season. Also is 100 % live bait with circle hook (Blue runners, skipjacks, small bonitos, squid or sardine). You only use lures when you are chasing the Tunas.
So I decided to go to Puerto Vallarta where I meet one of the best in the zone Capt. Manny Ocaranza and owner of "El Matador" a very nice 35 Flybridge CABO.
Our first trip on "El matador" was without him because Manny was on a family trip, his brother Mitchell Ocaranza was in charge with his deckhand Rogelio "Masa" Juarez. The trip was a 12 hrs trip in early March they were very good reports of YellowFin tuna and few striped marlin. We arrived to "El banco" at 10:00 AM we put some lures on the water to check all the zone.....I was watching the spread when a Medium striped marlin show up behind the lures. Hook UP! FISH ON! REVERSE! a very nice Striped Marlin maybe a 100 pounder.
We deciden to start fishing with some blue runners to see if there were a big Yellow Fin tuna. When they were putting the last Blue runner on the water it was a big strike on the rod. My friend el Chino was holding that rod just giving distance....FISH ON!
1 Hour, 2 Hours, 3 Hours, the fish was so strong 6 times we tried to land the fish but he was taking line when he was close to the boat. After 3 hours with 20 minutes the leader broke! very tough for me I was very sad. It was a very good SWORDFISH! maybe a 300 pounder. So we came back to vallarta with very good result: 1-4 on striped marlin and 0-1 on swordfish.
