Advice needed for hooking up and keeping tarpon on
I am new to rarpon fishing, but not fly fishing. I am from Seattle but now live in Trinidad and Tobago. Every night I have gone out tarpon fishing from shore I have hooked and or had major strikes from tarpon. Sometimes they spit the hook on the first jump, sometimes they don't even get to the jump before coming unbuttoned if they were even hooked to begin with. I am fishing in the near dark and even if I fish in the morning or evening I have to blind cast for them unless there is phosphorus when I can see glowing fish crashing through the surface.
What can I do to hook upand stay hooked up?
Also how fast should I retrieve at night?
Should I use subsurface, divers/sliders, or poppers?
Anything else you can help with would be great.
I have read High Rollers and Tarpon on the Fly but neither delves too deep into fishing in conditions outside of Florida.
