Good/bad day. Left home without my Thermacell, not a great deal except that my plan for the tournament was to primarily fish the Mangrove edges, Mosquito Heaven. Not a big problem, solved by rain pants, long sleeved shirt and a buff. First stop was covered with bait, Rolled up an over sized Red, pulled the hook as this fish would be a waste of time. Worked the rest of the cut, but it was nothing but one Ladyfish after another. Moved out towards a hole that holds big Trout, no chance a boat was anchored in the middle of it. Worked the next 2 cuts, but only turned up a few short Snook. On the way to my next spot took a shot at an area that holds good Trout. First one measured 23 inches, next one was 25 inches, put her in the live well. Both of these were caught dead sticking a Glow DOA Shrimp. Move it and it was instant Ladyfish. On to the Mangrove Swamp and a search for Reds. Water levels were way up so it would be rough. Popped a Rat. Then lost what was a slot Red, that is the danger of working with the boat tight to the Mangroves. Made the cast to the center of the cut, good hit and hook set, but instead of heading to the opposite shore she ran straight under the boat and into the Mangroves behind me. No chance to get her out. Worked the area with a popper. Big hit, got it in, a big Trout hooked deep. Released the smaller Trout and kept this one, 27 inches, and probably would not live. Weighed in at 7.91, but lost a pound for dead fish penalty.
On to one of my favorite spots. One more Rat and 4 short Snook. Made a decision to get out and wade. This would make it easier to work the edges. Watched a school of U-2's chasing bait right up to the edge. Then came the real show, something big tore into the school, pure chaos. Continued to wade the edge and watched another school crashing bait. Instant replay something big tore this school up. Saw a small spot of slick water in one of the pockets. Did not think about it until later when I was back in the boat. Every time that I have seen a slick spot, there was a Shark under it. A lot of work, and could not turn a slot Red, just a derelict Flounder.
